Mont Blanc

For MS

andy-merry

Hello, my name is Andy Merry, and I’m a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London.  In March 2016 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  MS is a condition of the central nervous system, which damages the nerve fibres throughout the body causing a whole range of physical symptoms such as fatigue, balance problems and dizziness.

I wanted to set myself a challenge to prove that MS doesn’t have to stop you from achieving your goals.  So in June 2017 five friends and I will be climbing Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps.  Climbing Mont Blanc will be a tough challenge for me as I suffer terribly from fatigue, I lose the use of my right leg after a short time walking and have balance problems and weakness in my right arm, but regardless of my symptoms, I am determined to complete the task!

We are climbing to raise money for two superb charities The MS Trust & The Royal Marines Charity; we aim to raise a minimum of £60,000.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for those that have already donated, for those who haven’t yet had the opportunity, please click on the ‘Donate’ links on this site, any help is greatly appreciated.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system. In MS, the coating around nerve fibres (called myelin) is damaged, causing a range of symptoms. Physical symptoms of MS  might commonly include vision and balance problems, dizziness, fatigue, bladder problems and stiffness and/or spasms.

More than 100,000 people in the UK have MS. Symptoms usually start in your 20s and 30s and it affects almost three times as many women as men.

Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms.

We don’t know the cause and we haven’t yet found a cure, but research is progressing fast.

“A diagnosis of MS doesn’t have to mean that you have a mountain to climb but rather, you can still climb a mountain.”
